Accounting job applications up 88%

The new year has seen job-seeking accounting professionals showing strong resolve to find new positions, with application rates in the sector rising by 88% in January 2018, compared to the end of 2017, according to job market data from CV-Library

The online job site reports strong increases in application rates in cities across the UK, with Manchester (92%), Birmingham (90.4%), Edinburgh (90.2%), Southampton (85.9%) and Bristol (873.7%) all seeing growth month-on-month.

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: ‘It’s true that in recent months application rates have remained stagnant, with the ONS reporting that the unemployment rate was at the joint lowest since comparable records began back in 1971. This is not surprising given the current state of the economy, in which many are looking for stability from their current employer.

‘But while the end of the year is traditionally a quieter time for recruitment, our Q4 job market report revealed that organisations were still working hard to attract talented accounting professionals last quarter. This determination has clearly paid off and candidates have come back in full force this January.’

Businesses also remained confident in January, with accounting vacancies seeing an increase of 77.9% month-on-month, and 14% year-on-year. Advertised salaries for new roles also moved up % month-on-month.

Biggins said: ‘It’s great to see that both advertised job vacancies and salaries also rose last month, with January traditionally being a busy time for recruitment. This is most likely because organisations will have received their annual budgets and are well aware that candidates will look for opportunities in the New Year.’
