HMRC offers free app for taxpayers to check basic details
HMRC is promoting a new app, with a quick guide for taxpayers on how to use the app to find information about their tax, national insurance, tax credits and benefits on the move, but has no plans to offer a free app for Making Tax Digital
21 Dec 2017
The free HMRC app is available from the app store for iOS and the Google play store for Android.
Users will need to enter their government gateway ID and password the first time they sign in. Subsequently, depending on what their handset supports, they will be able to sign in using a six-digit PIN, fingerprint authentication, or facial recognition.
HMRC says taxpayers can use the app to view their tax code and an estimate of the tax to be paid; see income and benefits; check their National Insurance number; and view their tax credits payments schedule and apply for renewals.
Individuals can also use HMRC’s tax calculator on the app, and track forms and letters they have sent in. HMRC will use the app to provide users with six-digit access codes to make their HMRC accounts more secure, and users can set up their personal digital tax account on the app.
Dawn Register, tax partner at BDO said: ‘The HMRC app feels very similar to online banking and major retailers. The menu choices are obvious, and the finger tabs are as fast as you like.
‘However the twist of course is that this could create a false sense of speed and simplicity when it comes to getting your taxes right.
‘Unfortunately for many people, their tax affairs are just way more complex than a swipe, a click or a drop-down menu, and no advance in technology is going to change that.’
